A PINCH OF HISTORY... |

At the beginning of its history, mosaic replaced soil in houses or worship places. |

The most ancient greek mosaic (BC) are made of pebbles in their original shape, roughly circular, and mainly white, red and black. |

Then the range of colours and materials widens, to reach little by little the use of tesserae, more and more closely assembled. The art of mosaic, originally discovered by Greeks, will be widely spread through the whole Roman Empire. |

Mural mosaic will reach a peak in the Byzantine world, where it will be the number 1 plastic arts. The materials are more or less the same as for ground mosaic, though with more glass paste, particularly gold and silver. |

After the near extinction of this art around the 15th century, a renewal starts at the 19th century, with enamelled materials. This technique will be used by Art Nouveau and Art Deco. |

For a few decades, the revival of this Art has come with an expansion as well as a diversification of the materials, techniques and styles. |
